Tax Return Review and Missing Accounts
During a recent tax planning review with a client, I spotted a number on line 13 that caught me completely off guard.
I always walk through the full tax return line-by-line to make sure we’re not missing anything. That’s when I saw the HSA contributions.
The client paused and said, “I forgot to mention that one.” Turns out we had never added the account to their financial picture when we first got organized.
The balance had quietly grown into something meaningful over the years.
Moments like this are exactly why I love combining tax preparation with ongoing tax planning.
Tax returns have a way of revealing the forgotten pieces—old accounts, overlooked deductions, or strategies started years ago that never made it onto the balance sheet.
In this case, the HSA became a great opportunity to rethink how it fits into the long-term plan: not just for medical expenses today, but as another powerful tax-efficient account for later in life.
Sometimes the real value of reviewing a return isn’t just the taxes you save. It’s connecting the pieces of the financial puzzle that were hiding in plain sight.
Have you ever discovered a “forgotten” account or deduction while reviewing your taxes? What surprised you most on your last return?
